Based in Manchester and Liverpool, CUBE describes itself as one of the leading centres for contemporary architecture in Europe, "dedicated to broadcasting the ideas and issues that lie behind the buildings, spaces and environments that make up our built environment". The site's content is impressive, offering news on forthcoming exhibitions and seminars (with an archive of previous stories), plus a best practice directory, a useful education section, and a series of enjoyable and informative 'city tours' of Manchester. The design of the site is also excellent, with clear menus, beautiful images and effective use of colour coding. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 5 Mar 2006].

MADE - Midlands Architecture and the Designed Environment

MADE is the architecture centre for the West Midlands region. Describing itself as "an independent, neutral organisation that values the designed content of rural and urban design", the centre is "fundamentally involved with promoting best practice in architecture and the built environment. That means that we can engage with communities that design, procure, use and enjoy buildings and the spaces around them". The site offers a useful introduction to MADE's work, including coverage of news, events and competitions, as well as a worthwhile links page. Recently redesigned and moved to a new URL, the site's overall appearance and breadth of content is much improved, let down only by the overcomplicated and counter-intuitive menu system.
