Aberdeen Society of Architects
 http://www.aberdeenarchitects.org/

The Aberdeen Society of Architects, a chapter of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS), represents some 200 Chartered Architects within the City of Aberdeen, across Aberdeenshire and also Morayshire. Its site is slick and professional, featuring background about architects' services, an A-Z directory of architects, downloadable brochures, details of events, and a small list of links. American Institute of Architects
 http://www.aia.org/

Since 1857, "the AIA has represented the professional interests of America's architects". The AIA website is packed with information - including access to content aimed at AIA members (contract documents, a bookstore, job vacancies), as well as a section covering 'Architects & the Public' and a comprehensive database of AIA member architects. The site itself is neatly designed, though its navigation seems unnecessarily complex with a plethora of menus and a lack of an obvious site hierarchy. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. Association for Preservation Technology International (APT)
 http://www.apti.org/

According to the site, "the Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) is the premier cross-disciplinary organisation dedicated to promoting the best technology for conserving historic structures and their settings. US-based but with members in more than thirty countries, APT connects a network of architects, conservators, tradespeople, consultants, planners, curators, landscape architects, engineers, developers, educators, engineers, historians, apprentices and students". The site contains the information you would expect, including up-to-date details of publications, conferences, membership and local Chapters (branches), plus a useful 'Resources' section with reports, archives and a page of (mainly US and Canada-related) preservation links. Meanwhile, the appearance and legibility of the site is vastly improved following a recent redesign. [GAS, 24 Aug 2006].

Bristol Society of Architects
 http://www.bristolarchitects.com/

Although this site is nominally the home of the Bristol Society of Architects (Bristol and Bath Branch RIBA), most of it has usually been given over to an impressive collection of UK architecture links. Sadly, most of these links have now gone - visitors are pointed towards the links section of the RIBA site - meaning that the site's main function is to provide information about the BSA, local architects, and news and events. As if the loss of content was not enough, the site's recent redesign is also very disappointing, with unnecessary animations, counter intuitive navigation, and the hijacking of the browser's status bar for a pointless welcome message. Institute of Destination Architects and Designers (IDAD)
 http://www.idad.org/

According to the site, "IDAD architects and designers are responsible for the planning and development of all aspects of land/water interfaces relating to resort, sport and destination development, including marine, riparian and freshwater bodies. This polyspecialised field is concerned with human/water interactions, resort, travel, tourism and hospitality issues at inland, landfall, near-shore and offshore sites". The site is a vast and comprehensive resource, with information about the Institute, a gallery, and sections covering research, publications and research and links. However, navigation around the site is confusing, with individual pages sporting one of two layouts, presumably due to an ongoing redesign. [GAS, 11 Sep 2005].

International Association for People-Environment Studies (IAPS)
 http://www.iaps-association.org/

IAPS "works to facilitate communication on the relationships between people and their physical environment", and describes itself as "the forum for scholars who have an interest in an interdisciplinary exchange and in the study of the transactions and interrelationships between people and their socio-physical surroundings (including built and natural environments) and the relation of this field to other social and biological sciences and to the environmental professions" - thus, members of IAPS represent a diversity of professions, including architects, city and regional planners, landscape architects, interior designers and psychologists. Features of the site include the history, aims and objectives of IAPS; background on the notion of 'people-environment studies'; details of the association's boards, networks and members; news, events and publications; and a useful page of links. Though the design and navigation of the site is generally good, the main text throughout the site is too small to read comfortably. [GAS, 16 Sep 2006].

RIBA - Royal Institute of British Architects
 http://www.riba.org/

After previously being incorporated within RIBA's architecture.com portal site, the Institute now gets its own site back again. With architecture.com providing a more general resource "all about architecture", riba.org focuses on the activities of RIBA itself, including extensive information about membership (practice, CBD, directory of existing members, etc.) as well as a 'members only' area. Elsewhere, the Institute's 'news and views' are represented by a helpful series of press releases and policy documents, while those who are interested can find out about the latest RIBA competitions. The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) was founded in 1916 as the professional body for all chartered architects in Scotland and describes itself as "the foremost architectural professional institute in the country dealing with architecture and the built environment". It has charitable status and offers a wide range of services and products for architects, students of architecture, construction industry professionals and all those with an interest in the built environment and the design process.
