Communication and Design with the Internet
 http://www.communication-design.net/

The Internet is changing the way that architects, planners, and builders communicate - with clients, with each other, with government agencies, and with the public. Jonathan Cohen's book, 'Communication and Design with the Internet', sets out to explain the ways that design and building professionals are using the new technologies to improve their practice, with the aim of giving readers the vision and skills needed to implement an Internet strategy in their own firms. This attractive and informative site features Chapter 1 of the book available to read online; details of related seminars, author information, and a well-organised links section corresponding to the chapters of the book also feature, but have not been updated for some time. Parole
 http://parole.aporee.org/

Parole, a project of gruppo A12(I), Udo Noll (D) and Peter Scupelli (USA/I), describes itself as "a dynamic dictionary of the contemporary city... images, texts, quotations, comments, fragments of text, links to external websites, videos, sounds, webcams are some of the scattered elements which constitute its fragmented mosaic". The site features about 900 words, related to the transformation of the urban landscape, organised in a hypermedia database, as well as more than 1000 related links that can be searched or browsed. The colourful layout of the 'dictionary' entries is certainly unique, if not perhaps to everyone's taste; however, an alternative plain text interface does allow users to navigate the site in a more straightforward way. If you are prepared to look beyond parole's architectural pretension - including, of course, its aversion to using any capital letters - then you will find it a rich and enjoyable place to explore. Seven Wonders of the World - Ancient Times
 http://www.sevenwondersworld.com/

Seven Wonders of the World does exactly what it says on the tin, offering information about the location and history of the Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Statue of Zeus, Colossus of Rhodes, Temple Of Artemis, Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and Lighthouse of Alexandria. Additional pages offer information on related individuals and places, such as Hammurabi and King Khufu, and provide coverage of more modern 'wonders' such as the Eiffel Tower and Taj Mahal. The design of the site is neat and tidy, and its content is informative, with the cross-linking between entries particularly effective; however, the absence of any images is a little disappointing - the addition of artists' impressions or photographs would really help enliven the site. Square One
 http://www.squ1.com/

Square One describes itself as a "complete environmental design resource for architects, designers and educational institutions, in order to encourage the energy efficient design of buildings". Compiled by academics from the Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University, the site normally provides pages of excellent material relating to efficient design, lighting design and acoustic design, as well as a section of downloadable software tools; however, the site is currently unavailable pending a revamp that is due for completion in June 2006. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 28 May 2006].

Trainsheds Gallery - The Shed & The Cathedral
 http://www.p.lodz.pl/I35/personal/jw37/sheds/trainsheds.html

This billingual site (in English and Polish) is a well-designed and nicely illustrated site on railway architecture, focussing on the evolution of trainshed design (a trainshed being defined here as "any building structure that contains tracks and platforms (or alighting area) and is covered by a roof - not a ceiling". The site includes maps showing the location of trainsheds across Europe, a small section of links, and a gallery with useful accompanying text. [GAS, 3 Jun 2006].

Urbanwords: the website of The Dictionary of Urbanism
 http://www.urbanwords.info/

Published by Streetwise Press, The Dictionary of Urbanism is described as "a comprehensive and often irreverent reference for everyone whose business or passion is cities. It defines and explains almost every word or phrase that a councillor, developer, built environment professional, community activist or urban explorer is likely to hear or read". This website accompanying the book inevitably does its best to drum up sales with glowing reviews and details of where to buy it, but is also an interesting resource in its own right. Content includes a regularly updated supplement to the book featuring new dictionary entries, a browsable list of entries, selected quotations, details of how to contribute, and a useful list of references, while a very good links page flags up other urbanism and related sites.
