Durham Revisited

Durham Photographic Society
(2005)
Paperback - 128 pages
Tempus Publishing
ISBN: 0752436325

Synopsis by Amazon.co.uk:
The ever-changing face of Durham, one of England's most important historical cities, is a constant source of fascination to residents and visitors alike. For almost 1,000 years the skyline has been dominated by the world-famous cathedral and castle, towering on a rock above the River Wear, while down in the city centre beautiful Georgian and Victorian facades give an impression of permanence. But change is constant and huge alterations have taken place since 1999 when the Durham Photographic Society compiled its first volume on the city to mark the millennium. Roads have been altered, Victorian-style town houses have been erected, and the new GBP100 million University Hospital of North Durham has been built to replace the old Dryburn Hospital. In this second edition, members of the Society have selected the old pictures from the records held at Beamish Museum, Durham University's collection by the late Dr C.W. Gibby, and the noted photographic business of John Edis and his daughter Daisy, and have then taken the same scenes from a modern-day perspective. Whether it is in buildings, roads, fashion or an event like the Miners' Gala, the changes are there for all to see in this nostalgic second volume.
