BALTIC The Centre for Contemporary Art

Opened in Summer 2002, BALTIC is a major international centre for contemporary visual art situated in Gateshead in the North East of England. BALTIC has a premier site on the south bank of the River Tyne and lies right at the heart of the regeneration area of Gateshead Quays. Recently redesigned, the site has benefited from dispensing with its separate Flash and HTML versions, instituting a new HTML version that is much less grey and intimidating than its predecessor. Content is plentiful and well organised, with sections covering exhibitions, visitor information, the BALTIC's learning programme, and a comprehensive history and background of the BALTIC project. A worthwhile links page features sites relating to Newcastle, Gateshead and national and international art. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 11 Sep 2006].

The Hub Centre

The Hub Centre is a new gallery space in the attractive market town of Sleaford, Lincolnshire, accommodating some artists previously based at Heckington Pearoom, and with an ambitious programme of events. Designed by Heike Becker of Frank Shaw Associates, and opened on 7th October 2004, the Hub is entirely given over to contemporary crafts and offers the largest display space for crafts in Britain. The building is centred around an old warehouse, once used by Hubbard's Seeds (hence the Hub's name) and has two new wings and a new build black box gallery on the top floor. The Hub's site is attractively designed, with news and information about its events, exhibitions and activities. [GAS, 11 Sep 2006].
