Do you remember Murton's department store in Newcastle?

As part of my PhD research, I am tracing the history of the buildings at 68-82 Grainger Street, from when they were first built until the present day, and I would like your help.

Many local people will remember Henry A Murton's department store which occupied this location when Grainger Street was Newcastle's prime shopping thoroughfare. The buildings were later taken over by the CO-OP, before being vacated in the 1970s. Today, the buildings are home to KFC, Damart and One Stop News, and the long derelict upper floors are in the process of being renovated.

I would be delighted to hear from people who have any memories of Murton's or the CO-OP, perhaps as a shopper or someone who worked there. Your memories will be a valuable contribution to my research, helping me build up a rich and varied picture of the buildings' past.
