04/10

This site, by Sapling Editor, Graham Soult, concerns itself with Ashdell, a listed Victorian villa in the Sheffield suburb of Broomhill. In the late 1990s, Ashdell's garden and other nearby greenspaces were at risk of being sold for housing development. This site provides an archive of the successful campaign to prevent this development, and addresses the many planning issues raised by the proposals. The site also features a number of good quality photographs of Ashdell and its garden. [GAS, 11 Oct 2006].

The site is regularly updated, and features useful links to relevant articles and sites, together with images of the Newcastle and other similar Paramount Theatres elsewhere. [GAS, 16 Aug 2005].

Thumbnail image of http://www.judywoods.dial.pipex.com/ Judy Woods - Save Our Heritage Site

http://www.judywoods.dial.pipex.com/

06/10

Judy Woods - a place not a person - is a 40 hectare area of woodland in Bradford and adjoining Calderdale, which local campaigners are trying to get nominated as a local nature reserve. According to the site, its purpose "is to let people know about our campaign group who are fighting to protect and preserve our land and heritage not just for now but for future generations", featuring vast amounts of information and argument. Copiously illustrated sections cover the background and history of Judy Woods, public rights of way, the area's wide diversity of wildlife (mushrooms and fungi, butterflies and moths, mammals, trees, insects, spiders, beetles, birds, and amphibians and molluscs), forthcoming events, and proposed developments that the campaigners believe will impact upon the woods. An excellent links page is also provided. On the downside, the site uses the dreaded combination of yellow and green text on a black background, but this only slightly detracts from what is a highly impressive effort overall. Thumbnail image of http://www.newbridge-memo.net/ Newbridge Memorial Hall

http://www.newbridge-memo.net/

08/10

Sapling Site of the Month (also awarded a Sapling Commendation)
Runner-up in the 2004 series of the BBC's 'Restoration', Newbridge Memo is described as "the best surviving Art Deco theatre/cinema in Wales". Home of the Celynen Collieries Institute and Memorial Hall, it has been called a "remarkable testament to the men who gave their lives in the great war 1914 -18, [and] to the Miners of South Wales and their families who toiled to improve themselves through the social and education amenities that were to become world famous as the Miners' Institutes". However, following the decline of the mining industry, the Memo was forced to close in the 1980s and subsequently fell into disrepair. Today, however, the Memo is looking towards a future as a thriving community arts centre, though funding is needed to save the buildings. The campaign site for the Memo is an attractive and highly professional affair, while managing to evoke the project's evident 'rootedness' within the local community. Sections cover community action, the architectural importance of this "Jewel in the Valleys", and its appearance on the 'Restoration' show. Elsewhere, an excellent illustrated history traces the evolution of the building through various incarnations (live music venue, cinema) and its subsequent decline. Overall, this is an informative and engaging site, which can only help in the campaign to save the Newbridge Memo. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 5 Nov 2005].

http://www.thenewportship.com/

08/10

Sapling Site of the Month (also awarded a Sapling Commendation)
In the summer of 2002 the well preserved remains of a mediaeval ship were discovered during excavation works for a new Arts Centre on the banks of the River Usk in central Newport, Wales. It is one of the most complete examples of a ship believed to have been built around 1465. This website for the Friends of the Newport Ship includes lots of information about the discovery of the ship, ongoing research, and the activities and work of the Friends group. The site is well designed, packed with good quality photographs, and is a mine of interesting and useful information. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 5 Mar 2006].
