Orangeries

Orangeries are becoming increasingly popular extensions to homes, since many people appreciate that an orangery often makes a more suitable area for a kitchen or dining room than a conservatory.
Certainly, orangeries offer more privacy and often complement certain architectural styles more satisfactorily. To understand this, it is worth reading about the history of orangeries and how they were introduced into the UK.
The main differentiation between conservatories and orangeries, is that an orangery will generally incorporate a flat roof at the perimeter with one or more inset roof lanterns. This makes for an interesting ceiling, as there will be substantial daylight in which to work and evening dining can be enjoyed under a starlit sky. The roof can also be enhanced with contemporary recessed-downlighters with dimmer switches.
As well as a flat roof area, an orangery will usually include areas of solid wall within the overall design. Together, these features offer practicality and a solution to problems arising when adding extensions to some listed properties. With a flat roof connection to the property, access to upper windows is made easier and pitched glazing will not impede views from these windows. Finally, the 17th century origins of the orangery can make them more acceptable than a modern conservatory to Planning Officers.
Richmond Oak has extensive experience of planning issues for listed buildings and in conservation areas. And each orangery we design is created to meet the individual aspirations of the homeowner and the style of their property. Then skilled craftsmen use traditional skills to translate these designs into a finished conservatory, which is finally erected and connected to your home.
At Richmond Oak, we place great importance on the use of wood and the impact of its use on our planet. With the rise in global warning and destruction of forestry, we believe that certain woods should not be used in conservatory construction. That’s why we only use wood from sustainable sources.
We don’t even produce big glossy brochures showing our work, since we know that many of these will simply get thrown away and not even recycled. We depend on the photographs that our installation consultants can show you, or that you can find on our website.
