BBC News Online is almost certainly the most comprehensive news site in the UK, and is continually updated. Content is organised into key sections - World, UK, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Business, Politics, Health, Education, Science/Nature, Technology and Entertainment - and includes a growing range of audio and video stories as well as written articles. Many stories are covered in depth, with useful hyperlinks to earlier stories on the same topic. The searchable archive includes all stories from 1 November 1997 onwards. A relatively recent addition to Google's services, Google News is a fantastic resource. Users are able to search and browse 4,500 different news sources, from all over the world, from one location. Content is updated continuously, and stories relating to a given search term can viewed by relevance or date. Headlines on the main homepage relate mainly to US stories, but various international versions (such as Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the UK) can be accessed using the links at the foot of the page. A great time saving site, perfect for getting an international and multi-faceted perspective on the stories of the day. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 12 Nov 2007].

Guardian Unlimited

Guardian Unlimited describes itself as the "best daily newspaper on the world wide web", and is probably right. Certainly, it is one of the best UK newspaper sites, combining content from the Guardian and Observer papers with dedicated online features. A searchable archive contains all articles from 1 September 1998 onwards; moreover, unlike many of its competitors, access to archived articles remains free of charge. The site itself is well-designed, with easy access to key sections such as arts, politics and business. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 5 Mar 2006].

The online version of the UK's Independent newspaper, this site offers less dedicated online content than, say, Guardian Unlimited, but is still a valuable and well-designed resource. The layout of the site is clear, with the searchable archive providing access to articles from 1999 onwards. Many articles - marked with a 'P' symbol - are only accessible to 'Independent Portfolio' subscribers, though a range of pricing options allow users to access anything from a single article to the entire Portfolio content. Newspaperindex.com is a simple but effective concept, providing a list of online newspapers in every country of the world. The site benefits from clear selection criteria, stating that "we collect and maintain links only to websites containing local, free and independent news from each country. You will not find links to sites that solely grab information and content from other sources, local or sport news. We only include websites with free public access that have a local editorial staff of independent journalists and in most cases a printed version as well. Another important thing is that we only accept news sites that are daily updated". If the site's intention is "not about collecting links [but] evaluating quality news sites and presenting the best sources for your worldwide research" it certainly succeeds. Navigation is simple, and the design and layout of the site is clear and attractive; furthermore, the site is provided in English, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Spanish and German versions. Telegraph.co.uk is the online portal for both The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph newspapers, with a searchable archive including articles going back to 1996. The design and layout of the site is rather modern, bearing more of a resemblance to BBC News than to other online newspaper sites, such as The Independent or Guardian - it works well, however.
