Assembly of European Regions (AER)
 --NEW URL-- http://www.a-e-r.org/

Created in 1985, the Assembly of European Regions (AER) is a political organisation of the regions of Europe and the speaker for their interests at European and international level. Its mission is "to bring together the regions of Europe and to allow them to act in the construction of Europe and European integration". The AER currently has 250 member Regions from 26 countries and 12 member interregional organisations. This well organised site has information about the AER's responsibilities and areas of interest (e.g. agriculture, regional policy, sustainable development, transport), together with coverage of its activities, programmes, events and publications. Committee of the Regions (COR)
 --NEW URL-- http://www.cor.europa.eu/

The Committee of the Regions (COR) is one of the youngest European institutions. It was created in 1994, as a 'consultative body' responsible for bringing a local and regional viewpoint on European Union legislation and policy. Responsibilities were initially limited to five areas: economic and social cohesion, trans-European infrastructure networks, health, education and culture; under the Treaty of Amsterdam (1999), employment policy, social policy, the environment, vocational training and transport were added as new areas for compulsory consultation. The site has a good deal of information about the COR's membership, activities, opinions and resolutions, plus a helpful section of other EU links. [GAS, 28 May 2006].

Global Planning Education Association Network (GPEAN)
 http://www.gpean.org/

GPEAN aims to "provide various urban planning organisations with opportunities for mutual communication and immediate report on the significant events of worldwide urban planning, discussing on the developing tide of planning theory, even further, improving the function of urban planning in public life, in order to build a city system which is sustainable and impelling". The site is a worthwhile resource, with links to its member organisations, and up-to-date news and events featured on the front page. Other parts of the site, accessed via the main menu, include up-to-date 'news from our associations' and a disappointing 'hotlinks' page with just two links. The design of the site is reasonable, though the black background gives it a rather funereal feel. [GAS, 23 Aug 2005].

UCLG - United Cities and Local Governments
 http://www.cities-localgovernments.org/

Formed in 2004, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) is the result of the unification of three organisations: the World Federation of United Cities (FMCU), the International Union of Local Authorities (IULA) and Metropolis, the international association of major metropolises. The UCLG site is an impressive and well-designed resource, packed with content - highlights include news, events and links; information on policies, partners and programmes; details of the Millennium Towns and Cities Campaign; and the Women in Local Decision-Making Library.
