SCRAN - Multimedia Resources On History And Culture
 http://www.scran.ac.uk/

SCRAN describes itself as "the history and culture site which lets you learn directly by accessing images, movies, sounds and virtual reality". The site offers instant access to images, sounds, movies and learning resources about Scotland, and contains over 330,000 images from museums, galleries and archives. Access was originally free, but is now restricted to subscribers only - however, many institutions already subscribe to SCRAN (access is via an Athens username and password), and home subscriptions are offered at a realistic price. Overall, SCRAN is attractively designed, easy to use, prolifically illustrated, and a very useful and innovative resource. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 20 Jun 2006].

Vitruvio.ch
 http://www.vitruvio.ch/

Vitruvio.ch is an excellent site which gathers together information about architecture on the Web. Written in English and Italian, the site's coverage is vast, complementing its own content with links to external resources. Highlights include 'Masters': a comprehensive index of famous architects; sections covering various periods of architectural history; and a series of architectural travel guides. Information can be easily browsed, or there is a very good search tool too. Redesigned a year ago, the site's new interface is disappointingly bland, but Vitruvio.ch remains a useful and important architecture site. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 8 Sep 2006].

American Society of Landscape Architects
 http://www.asla.org/

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is a national professional society that represents the landscape architecture profession in the United States. The site is aimed both at professionals and the public, with sections covering information about ASLA, membership, products and services, news and publications, meetings and events, career resources, and government affairs. Key features include JobLink, described as "the premier online job listing service for the field of landscape architecture", and FirmFinder, a facility where the public can find details of ASLA-registered landscape architects. All together, this is a site which is attractive, well organised, and comprehensive in its coverage of landscape-related information. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 6 Nov 2005].

Cyburbia
 http://www.cyburbia.org/

Cyburbia has undergone a period of change in recent years, with the architecture links purged, and the decision made to refocus entirely on planning. Though the core Resource Directory retains its impressive coverage, with 1,900 planning-related links, it is not clear how often - or whether - this content is being actively maintained. In contrast, Cyburbia's forums are excellent, and incredibly well-used, while the Planetizen news headlines on the home page are also a useful feature, automatically updated on a daily basis. While Cyburbia's glory days as the most important built environment links directory may be over, we can be grateful that its forums remain an exceptionally impressive resource. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 6 Nov 2005].

UK Local Government Information
 http://www.gwydir.demon.co.uk/uklocalgov/

The highlights of this invaluable site are the clickable maps with links to all the UK county councils, district councils and unitary authorities that maintain websites. Alternatively, sites can be accessed from a text listing, in county sequence for England and in simple alphabetical order for each of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Other useful features include a table of Council Political Compositions, and a number of local government related links. There are few aesthetic bells and whistles here, but what the site might lack in style it more than makes up for in its ease of use and functionality. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. CABE - Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment
 http://www.cabe.org.uk/

CABE, which replaced the UK's Royal Fine Art Commission in 1999, describes itself as "the champion for architecture in England". It seeks to improve people's lives by promoting high standards in the design of buildings and the spaces between them. The site is excellent - professionally designed and well organised, with sections covering news and events, publications, policy, research, regions, skills and education. A helpful page of related links is also provided, and reports and other documents are available to download in PDF format throughout the site. The recently launched CABE Digital Library is also very good, giving "free access to detailed information on some of the UK's best buildings and public spaces". Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 24 Aug 2005].

January 2001

Architecture.com
 http://www.architecture.com/

Ever modest, Architecture.com describes itself as "one of the world's most extensive built environment portals". It is certainly true - this well-organised site, run by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), claims to have 250,000 pages of useful information about architecture, architects, and RIBA itself, including news, competitions, events, jobs, and many other useful features. One of the flagship services is the RIBA library catalogue - a free, regularly updated index to 175,000 articles from 300 journals in 20 languages, 35,000 books, and over 1 million items in the special collections. Elsewhere, a helpful RIBA Links Library covers over 1000 architecture-related websites - including Sapling of course. Some might find the grey interface a little bleak, but that barely detracts from what is probably the definitive architecture resource - excellent. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 6 Nov 2005].
