Links and Gateways

DFID Transport Links
 http://www.transport-links.org/

DFID Transport Links presents information about transport-related matters arising out of the UK Department for International Development's (DFID) programme of aid to developing countries. The site is attractively designed and up to date, with sections covering news, events and research; a list of publications, available to download as PDF documents; discussion of issues arising out of the relationship between transport and development; and a good page of relevant links. A valuable resource. [GAS, 20 Aug 2005].

GEsource Geography and Environment Gateway
 http://www.gesource.ac.uk/

Led by the GEsource team at the University of Manchester, GEsource is a free online catalogue of over 8,000 high quality Internet resources in geography and environmental science (including many resources relevant to landscape architecture, transport, sustainability, and the built environment in general). Resources are selected, catalogued and indexed by researchers and other specialists in their respective fields. The site itself is well-designed and easy to use - visitors can browse by category or search the whole database, while the level of information given about each featured resource is impressive. Elsewhere, the site also boasts a series of 'Feature' sections, including one that draws together resources about a range of natural hazards, and another providing themed timelines that "look at significant dates and events that have shaped the geographical world, from the formation of the Earth to the present day". Overall, this is an excellent site and an invaluable resource. Awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 20 Jun 2006].

The Subway Page
 http://www.reed.edu/~reyn/transport.html

Compiled by Robert Reynolds, The Subway Page (or pages, really) is a hugely impressive and regularly updated collection of worldwide links to subway and other transportation information resources. One of the main features is a detailed list of links to city subway maps. Other sections cover - among others - subway route navigation aids; city and area transit guides; individual, institutional, and corporate transit pages; and museums, historical displays, and clubs. One might quibble about the site's slightly basic appearance, but this is essentially a site where the excellent content holds sway. Overall, a comprehensive and lovingly compiled resource, awarded a Sapling Commendation. [GAS, 13 May 2008].

Tra.ms
 http://www.tramway.com/

tra.ms is a one-page portal, with thumbnail images linking to important tram-related sites. The slickly redesigned page, with its extensive menus, gives the illusion of lots of material; in reality, however, they are all links to external sites, and tra.ms itself has little in the way of original content. Tramways.com
 http://www.tramways.com/

Not to be confused with the much inferior tra.ms at tramway.com (i.e. in the singular - see entry above), this is an eclectic site featuring more than 5,000 photographs of tramways, buses, subways, trolleybuses, light railways and railways. There is an impressive collection of tramway and other public transport links, organised by country; based in Sweden, the site's Scandinavian coverage is particularly strong. There are no website frills here, but the site is certainly impressive in its size and coverage. [GAS, 21 Aug 2005].

 Trans-Top Links
 http://www.trans-top.com/

The Trans-Top website is available in Dutch and German versions, and now contains more than 7,000 transport-related links. Users can browse the site by theme, or search it by keyword. There are few visual frills, but the site is well organised and easy to follow, even for those who can't read Dutch or German. Its vast coverage alone makes it an impressive and valuable portal site.
