The Civic Trust
 http://www.civictrust.org.uk/

The Civic Trust describes itself as "Britain's leading charity devoted to enhancing the quality of life in Britain's cities, towns and villages: the places where people live, work, shop and relax". This website is quite neatly designed and organised, if a little texty, but it does offers masses of useful information. Among the site's features are details of the annual Heritage Open Days and Civic Trust Awards; information about the work of the Civic Trust Regeneration Unit (CTRU); and a section for civic societies nationwide, with useful links to all those civic societies with their own websites. Affiliated to the Civic Trust, The Ipswich Society was founded in 1960 and describes itself as "a community of people who care about the appearance, character and well-being of the town, its past and its future". Well organised and neatly presented, the Society's website includes information about forthcoming events, membership, its aims and objectives, a decent links page, and an archive of contents lists and selected articles from the Society's quarterly newsletter. The site also provides coverage of the Society's annual awards for good quality new or refurbished buildings, and its series of blue plaques "to mark the connections between buildings and distinguished residents of the past". The site has information related to current planning and heritage issues, articles from the Trust's newsletter, an up-to-date events listing, and a section devoted to some of the most architecturally important buildings in the city. The Scottish Civic Trust
 http://www.scottishcivictrust.org.uk/

The Scottish Civic Trust was founded in 1967 and is Scotland's only voluntary organisation working to raise the quality of the whole built environment. According to its site, the Trust seeks to "encourage excellence in the conservation of the past, in contemporary architecture and planning and in effective public education and participation in all these concerns". The site includes the basic information you would expect about the Trust and its work, with sections covering casework, Buildings at Risk, the annual Doors Open Days, and the Civic Trust Movement. However, the overall content feels quite thin - greater depth, together with a more professional interface, would allow the Trust to better celebrate the extent and value of its work. Other features include special sections on the Wavertree Garden Suburb and the Blue Coat School, and a well-used 'Wavertree Memories' message board. [GAS, 15 Aug 2005].
